What I hate most are people thinking that the only reason to give an other animal shelter is to give them "work" (or in better words: exploit their specific abilities), but OP is kinda right still, many people are giving shelter to other animals and don't care enough for their furry, scally or feathered friends. It is hard to see how these creatures stay loyal to their humans despite being neglected or even abused violently. They deserve better for staying with us. But still, there are a lot of kind humans caring good for their non-human friends, too.
