I'm a way better narcissist than you. 🙂‍↕️

Psychiatry is a load of shit, don't put too much stock in it.

[–]Bunnygirl[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (22 children)

Why is it?

[–]American_Muskrat 5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 1 fun6 insightful - 2 fun -  (13 children)

It's not really based on science, the treatments have ridiculously low success rates with a high incidence of side effects, sometimes permanent, and psychiatry tends to pathologize undesirable but otherwise normal human behavior.

Welcome to the forum btw, u/neolib was very excited you have joined us.

[–]cunninglingus 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (7 children)

It's not really based on science

Psychiatry is absolutely a science

Perhaps you're thinking of psychology

Don't mislead other narcissists into the wrong life choices. That's incredibly abusive.

(Neolib wanted to help; I doubt excitement was his issue.)

[–]American_Muskrat 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (6 children)

It's a field where they don't know what causes their patient's problems nor how to cure them. It's claptrap and superstition.

[–]cunninglingus 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

Do you really want to argue about psychiatry? In practice, it's of course highly problematic. In general, there have been incredible benefits thanks to this field, since the 18th century. It's foundations are less the issue than its current practice IMO.

[–]American_Muskrat 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Name a benefit.

[–]cunninglingus 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

What? Treatment for debilitating pathologies.

[–]Bunnygirl[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Oh, I thought you ment for NPD

[–]cunninglingus 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

NPD can be a pathology

[–]Bunnygirl[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Well, your self confidence is through the roof lol

[–]Bunnygirl[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

Thank you and it's nice to know your happy I'm here...

And understand what your saying about psychiatry but just because they don't have a treatment doesn't mean there isn't an illness. I understand that therapy can pathologize normal behaviour but I don't have normal behaviour. I have an expectation that things will always work out in my way and when it doesn't I use to think it could never have been my fault. I used to always over estimate my ability and I found it very hard to relate or empathize with others. I'm always thinking about myself and everyone else like a secondary character. I find it hard to form relationships with others because caring about others doesn't come naturally to me.

It's hard to accept you have problems when you have NPD. It took me a long time to understand that there's something fundamentally wrong with me. My narcissism was a defence mechanism from the world around me when I was young so admitting something is wrong with you really hurts.

[–]cunninglingus 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Some good points here. One bit that's missing is that narcissists are primarily focused on one thing: how to manipulate others into what you want them to do for you, and in that manner to validate you. When you can start to enjoy validation through your own achievements, without manipulating others, you'll develop through your own actions improvements in your life that are truly your own and will lead to other achievements.

Moreover, the purposes of psychiatry and psychology are not to pathologize normal behaviour. The opposite is true. A pathology is certainly not a normal behaviour. You can argue that there are pathological tendencies in all of us, but those pathologies are destructive, not constructive. Understanding and working with those pathologies, in order to avoid the associated destructive problems, are the necessary goals for a healthy life. American_Muskrat's comments about psychiatry are false.

[–]Bunnygirl[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Why does everyone think they are a mental expert when it comes to narcissism? Thire analysis always boils down to "NPD is when your a stinky poopoo head who is a big meanie". Everyone can be manipulative it's not exclusive to NPD.

I hate how stigmatised NPD is especially in this age of mental health awareness. It's like with disabilities people only care it's something socially acceptable like depression or anxiety but not when it comes to other things that can ruin your life like ASPD, BPD or NPD then people think your the second version of satan.

[–]LarrySwinger2 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I'm skeptical of the claim that what you describe is pathological. Empathy can be a weakness and self-centeredness can give you an edge and help you focus on goals. It's only in social situations that this kind of mentality looks bad. But the majority of humans are idiots so you don't want to be held back by them. I'm not saying empathy is bad necessarily either or that it has no use. There's healthy and pathological empahty, and healthy and pathological self-centeredness. If you're showing the pathological side of the latter, then perhaps developing empathy can counteract that, but it can just as easily be a pitfall. I agree with Musky that modern psychiatry is bullshit. They claim that on a physical level your brain activity diverges from the norm, but there are no tests to verify that. There isn't even the attempt to map traits or supposed illnesses to neuron patterns. It's one big hoax. I don't like breaking down my comments into paragraphs.

[–]tradecoder 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

No problem👍 NPD is a mental illness that is to do with feelings of self-worth and self centuredness. NPD can make you feel like your never wrong and your the main character in a TV. NPD can be problematic to relationships of all kinds because with NPD it's hard to empathize with others or admit your wrong. NPD is hard to live with and hurts the sufferer just as much as anyone else. People with NPD can be problematic the same way someone with the black death would. It's only problematic because a lot of people with NPD struggle to get help for they're disorder

Your spelling looks just fine and you don't seem to have problems just busting into a forum of strangers and talking about your problem in great detail.

In other words you're bullshit

I studied counseling

/u/bunnygirl

[–]Bunnygirl[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

What do you mean by "busting into a forum of strangers and talking about your problem in great detail." What forum isn't filled with strangers? This isn't a private discord server. Secondly I did not go into great detail if you studied counselling you what know that what I said is the first thing on the Wikipedia page.

Also, thank you very much. I've been working on my grammar. Nice to know it's paying off.

[–]tradecoder 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

You said you can't spell yet you're spelling looks just fine to me.

You came into an forum and started talking about how your mental disorder causes you to attempt or think about suicide..

You said you can't find a job yet you have all day to sit around in a forum..

I studied counseling.

Most people that say that they want help do not really want help but instead they want people to sit with them and tell them that they're really okay and then they continue on with their problems.

Again I studied counseling

Go to Walmart and get a job as a greeter or as a stocker and move on with your life and stop sitting around here and chatting with trannies.

[–]Bunnygirl[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I don't sit around all day posting here if you looked at my post history you would see most of my posts are posted around 3-to-9 so not exactly working hours and if you looked at my posts I did say I was working on myself.

So just because some people want to be enabled that means nobody can ever want to change or get help. Ok then I guess we're all just doomed and things can never get better. I post here because I'm looking for advice and a place where I can say the things I can't say irl. It's nice to be able to express your self anonymously in a neutral space.

[–]Canbot 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Look up mouse utopia. When life becomes too easy it makes mamals go crazy.

The solution is most likely to force your kids to endure hardships, like participating in competitive sports. Kids who do are far healthier. All the mentally unstable and LGBT+ kids are overwhelmingly under represented in that cohort.

[–]LarrySwinger2 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

So then they troon out and unleash their wrath by joining women's sports.

[–]Canbot 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Troons in women's sports are literally avoiding competition. The rule should simply be that they compete in men's leagues. They would also benefit there.

Hi Bunny.

There's a lot of stigma towards NPD.

Yeah. The only thing I know about NPD is that relationships with such people are often problematic.

Can you elaborate a bit on what NPD is, and how problematic relationships result?

[–]Bunnygirl[S] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (8 children)

Thanks!

How is NPD treated?

When you say people "struggle to get help", is help CBT, or drugs or something else?

[–]Bunnygirl[S] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

NPD can be treated though therapy and self awareness. Understanding your not perfect and you have a problem. It's hard to admit you have a problem with NPD so a lot of sufferers never get help and NPD is a new diagnosis so a lot of psychologists don't know how to treat it but a therapist can still give good insight into your self that's worth having.

As long as you're not like some of my old bullies who have it, then you're good. I have traits of paranoid personality disorder BTW

[–]Bunnygirl[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

I was told about you. How do you know your old bullies had NPD?

[–]gloomy_bear 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

They were the textbook case of it. Different subtypes of it. Individuals with NPD are more likely to bully, specifically the antagonistic and malignant subtypes.

[–]WoodyWoodPeckerHah he he he hah! 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

My bullies had NPD as well, some of them had a black belt in TKD which prompted me to learn martial arts and defend myself when they attacked me.

[–]gloomy_bear 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Damn some of them got physical? One of them was a similar size as me so whenever she tried to run me over like a bull in a china shop, I'd push her back. The other NPD one was underweight and I could've body slammed her if I wanted to.

[–]WoodyWoodPeckerHah he he he hah! 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

One was only five feet tall but was a black belt in TKD. The shorter one is the more leverage they get in martial arts. A Vice Principle broke up the fight.

[–]Bunnygirl[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I haven't seen my old therapist in like 4 years as it got too expensive but I'm in the process of getting my shit together so I can see one again. I do a lot of research on the web and I know that sounds like a recipe for disaster but I only use trustworthy sites positivepsychology and Calm also it's helpful to read/watch from the prospective of other people going through the same problem on sites like Reddit and YouTube. Empathy at the end of the day is having a good imagination so I do things like go out of my comfort zone and imagine things as if they were happening to me.
