I think you miss the main tactic here, which is asking questions to get someone to talk about themselves because that will always be their favourite subject.

The point isn't to connect with hobbies. When she tells you about her hobbies you don't then butt in with yours unless she asks. Rather you tell her how interesting and amazing her hobbies are but you don't know much about them and then use that as an excuse to ask her more questions about herself.
