I'm a vape user, so call it self-delusion if you want, but I'm pretty skeptical that this means much.

This detail from the article seems pretty important:

But interestingly, tobacco smokers did not suffer more inflammation than those that used neither device.

So apparently cigarettes are not only safer than vapes, but completely harmless.

We know that's not true, so I have to conclude they're just measuring the wrong thing. Could the inflammation observed only in vape users still indicate something negative? Absolutely, but trying to make a comparison between cigs and vapes based on these results doesn't make sense.
