This is so old. And stupid. From all sides.

1. People aren't allowed to change their minds? If you aren't embarrassed by at least some of your past opinions and beliefs, you are either omniscient like god, or a fucking moron.
2. Marriage used to be just for the wealthy ruling class. Only the sons and daughters of kings and dukes and barons had a formal marriage. Everybody else just moved in together and started living together. Sometimes they'd have a party for their friends and family.
3. Who gives a shit if in the past people defined marriage as between a man and woman? People in the past were dicks about lots of things. It wasn't just King Louis XIV of France who thought that burning live cats to death was the most hilarious entertainment.

Marriage is, and always has been, a financial arrangement more than an expression of love. If two people just love each other, they can just move in together. But marriage adds an economic side to it. This is why princes got married while paupers just shacked up together. This is why so many loveless marriages last for decades past the point that any initial passion has faded.

Today, marriage brings economic privileges regarding property, taxation and insurance, and legal privileges regarding who can make decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated. There is no good reason to deny those privileges to gays and lesbians.
