    Race as a method of categorization is muddied, there are more races of people in the world than are easily discernible. But in any case, the Jewish folk are a distinct ethnic group and the Germans at the time certainly saw them as a lower race... you know, what racism actually is.

    Yeah, I don't think Whoopi is viewing this in rational terms, but this perception is pretty ubiquitous in black communities, and I do understand where it is coming from. Blacks suffer from two things - discrimination based on appearance, and economic inequality. They see Jews pass as white and see them disproportianately in positions of wealth and influence. Not only that, they see articles like the one that appeared in the NYT recently proclaiming that Jews and Blacks 'are in the same boat'. Black Americans tend to see Jews as an especially privileged type of white person that masquerades as oppressed and claims minority status as cover for any unethical conduct, and I can totally understand how they could get this idea and not spend too much time thinking about this in another way

If you refuse to segregate your own away from other groups you'd never get the uniqueness we have today in global culture.     Well... "race" doesn't just have to mean "macro-group" as in "Negro", "Caucasian", and "Mongoloid". It can also mean ethic group, nation, tribe, etc.

    You know... Irish race, German race, Italian race.

    She assumes white Europeans couldn't clearly see a colour difference between Eastern European Jews and themselves. That's very wrong. Jews and gypsies both stood out clearly from the local populations in Northern Europe at that time.

    Jews have made a big effort to physically fit in since then. Why does she think there are so many jokes in Hollywood about getting your teen child a nose job or straightening your Jew fro.
