I've heard that in the old days most people lived and died within 30 miles of where they were born. Looking into that, it doesn't seem like that means they never traveled but they often stayed near family, with 30 miles representing a day's ride at a comfortable pace, and it certainly wasn't everyone, as many of the US states had decently sized percentages born elsewhere.

People were divided into settled and movers. Most people stayed put but a minority moved and travelled a lot. They often passed that instinct on to their kids. Most Americans will be descended from that latter group. Children of Cain.

I don't know what you mean by "save a little bit of money" when interest rates generally do not keep up with the rate of inflation.
