You are right, it would be trivial to create another site, but not so trivial to make it the most used platform of that type. See Trump's Truth Social. He wasn't buying an app so much as he was buying a user base and an audience to influence. He wants a say over speech on what he views as the modern public square, so he bought the public square

    there is the potential to make a lot of money in authoritarian misinformation politics

    So nothing has changed then, since misinformation politics was rife on the platform before Musk bought it.
