Didn't China also start doing something like this a few months ago? Right before a massive run for the banks, and protests?

that was fake news, unless you believe that their financial system has already collapsed as reported 3 months ago

There were mass protests against 5 local banks in one province and they combined that with videos/pictures of long line-ups at central banks to give an impression that there were massive runs for the banks. Except long-ass line-ups at banks has been a thing for years (2016 article): http://static.nfapp.southcn.com/content/201612/30/c233218.html

China tends to take extreme action to quell any sort of uprising. They used such dynamics to topple the ROC back in the day they are very much aware of the danger it poses to their current social order if things get out of hand.

The situation is rather precarious. I suspect their insistence on zero COVID policies at this point is a convenient excuse to shut down potential political demonstrations without expressly indicating to the public that is what they are doing.
