Who likes the taste of vodka enough to drink this stuff? Also, I think regular vodka is vegan and gluten-free.

Yep, all vodka is vegan and gluten free. The only thing vodka tastes of is ethanol, and that doesn't have much of a taste. This is mostly just a really expensive bottle of water, with added glycerin to mimic the mouthfeel and natural flavors, I assume to mimic the astringency.

So just potato water.

e: oh it's apple, so it's alcohol free apple vodka?

Beefeater Gin is also vegan.

Are there any alcoholic beverages that are produced with fermented meat?

Jagermeister (supposedly)?

Mead would not be vegan because it uses fermented honey. Anything that uses sugar is also potentially not vegan as well if the sugar was whitened using bone char. That's all that comes to mind.

Do the vegans know about the honey thing?

I bought a jar of honey, and put it in a cool dark place so it can ferment. It still looks the same.

It's taking forever.

I've never met one that didn't know about honey, although they don't always realize sugar isn't necessarily okay.

It'll never ferment as is, the high sugar content and natural antibiotic properties of honey (it actually produces hydrogen peroxide) make it an excellent preservative. If you've ever heard of enemy leaders in olden times being decapitated and their heads placed in a barrel of honey, that's to preserve it so that it can make the long trip back to be identified.

You'll need to dilute it with water and add yeast.

Why would vodka contain gluten or animal products to begin with?

[–]jet199Instigatrix 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I think something the animals products are used to filter and clear alcohol.

I've heard of that being done for beer or wine, but I would be somewhat surprised if it was commonly done with anything distilled, since that should clear nicely without extra help.

I doubt this is distilled
