I'm sure it's not by choice of the American people that the US has the highest rate of incarnation per capita and the highest number of incarcerated in the world. It's clearly not working, but I also don't believe the opposite works effectively either. Lenient sentences put career criminals back on the street to keep on committing. Locking degenerates away costs the taxpayer, setting them free to tear shit up costs the individual, the business owner, the taxpayer, the community...

Court systems are largely broken by their financial self-needs. Many have become revenue systems for counties. Make discriminatory charges against people with pretty nanny-state crime laws, fine them and then jail them for not paying, adding more fines, and the promise of more jail when they don't pay again. Then they charge the state for the cost of housing in jail people for not paying those charges.

Fine just never have worked. They are obviously not a deterrent from many types of crime. They are expensive to collect, requiring a whole armed army. No one wants to blow off serious crimes for fines, or you end up like Chicago, California, Washington, and Oregon, overran by gangs and organized crime.

Sentences have become less about enforcing laws and more about revenge. When you always have a gigantic media mob pressuring you to give the harshest possible punishment, it tends to happen. Watching other people suffer, especially enemies, has been a huge source of entertainment for humans for all of history. At least if the defendant is a man that is; for women the justice system is required to cover up their crimes and give them the best possible rulings, because society thinks women are always innocent and too special to face consequences for their actions even if they are guilty.

Since when does the media support this? They were 100% on board with the "defund the police" and BLM.

It's not suffering, although I'm sure that's really emotionally satisfying to say.

It's about incapacitation, a word anyone who's familiar with corrections would know. Criminals are overwhelmingly black, male, 15-35. What's the only one of those we can change? Keep them incapacitated and age them out of the danger zone. Once that's done, the risk to society is much lessened.

If you've got a better idea we're all ears.

They're not trying to age them out of the danger zone, that's the thing. They're trying to deliver a punishment to appease the mob watching the case. Prison sentences seem to have gotten like a trillion times longer since the media made its inception, almost everything is a life sentence now. There are plenty of much cheaper and more humane ways to deal with it, but the masses want to see them "rot". This can also be seen with the increasing difficulty people have with separating the law from morality. People now think if something is legal it's right, and if it's illegal it's wrong, the law is morality. And everything people don't like has to be criminalized. And there's no respect for liberty anymore, people are too obsessed with justice and security. No wonder politics are so heated, because people have forgotten that the government is not God.

What's the alternative, let criminals run free to harm anyone they want. Like the 711 sotre, anamals that did that would have been given a low fine for petty theft. Or this dude willing to kill anyone in the way, slap him with a fine.

I for one am happy anamals are locked up but hate knowing they are well cared for while I have to pay for food and medical.

Lmao. With certain communities in the US they really don't. It isn't that uncommon of a situation in certain communities for people to buy a car far beyond their ability to pay, ignore payments entirely, then destroy the car with a crowbar when the repo man shows up. Sometimes they'll even take some shots at other cars just to show how little they give a shit.

The prisons in America are privately owned and classified as "For Profit." This means they get so much money per prisoner and thus why you see such shit conditions. They also give kick backs and pay-off politicians through legal bribes called lobbying.

In other words, the people who can stop it, are profiting from it, so why stop it.
