I knew lots of them when I was in IT. They women were doing just fine but them I was in the Atlanta market and not California.

Yeah, I can think of at least 3-4 women I know either personally or professionally who are in lead / principal software development jobs.
I think anyone with the necessary talent and work ethic can get a job like that. The thing is, not a lot of people can do these jobs and want to do them. If it doesn't break down evenly along lines of sex and race, I still don't think you want to artificially put people in these jobs.
