Reminds me of 2015-2016, when the left ramped up it's propaganda machine and the corporate media started using some of the same dumb tropes and attacks the dumbest people on the right were using.

When the smarter people on the right started pointing out the hypocrisy, the left invented the term "whataboutism" as a dodge.

So if you tell a liberal, "Your reaction to the Jan 6th protest seems a little unbalanced when you completely ignored Democrats fire-bombing federal courthouses, setting cities on fire, and injuring and even killing people for the last four years", they'll respond with something nonsensical like, "That's just whataboutism! Just because a handful of people on the left are shitty doesn't mean everyone on the right should be shitty!"

I would expect a dumb response like that from some 12 year old partisan troll on Reddit. But I literally saw this on almost every left oulet. NPR. CNN. Slate. Huffpo. The Atlantic. It's like a memo went out and all the NPCs updated their programming accordingly, no matter just idiotic the point is.

It was safe little mental trick to maintain the cognitive dissonance of acting worse than their opponents, yet still believing they're the "good guys". Back then I was still a quasi-Democrat, but I was still moderate enough to be creeped the fuck out by that cultist mentality and jump off that bandwagon.

My friends who are still in the cult can't yet wrap their head around the fact that the opposition which is so rapidly building includes many people who are not the "Trumptards" they expect. They cannot perceive that there are rational reasons to doubt the cause; for them it must be the "little people".

Yes - and I think this form of name-calling can be used equally by anti-vaxxers against others, as well as by those who believe in facts, science &c against anti-vaxxers. It's one group referring to another group as lacking an appropriate grasp of reality.

so you’re suggesting that anyone that knows, for a fact that pfizer is a muderous company that is well known and documented for making extremely harmful products lacks some sort of grasp on “reality”?

this reality must be highly fucking subjective.

No - that's not the suggestion.

One who grossly oversimplifies international virology research and testing on billions of people to the notion of 'but pfizer makes a profit!' has lost touch with reality, and one reason for this is the spread of lies via social media, churches &c in a manner that builds mass consent to those lies - something one can call Mass Formation Psychosis. But before anyone else can make that term popular, get a "doctor" on Rogan's show who will reverse the target of that label, from its applicability to anti-vaxxers, to its applicability to the 90%+ who value facts and science above the opinions of a few entertainers who are heavily funded by a few rich folks who will get richer with the spread of COVID19.

It's not something new. It's been used since the beginning of time. How many of us were awake 20 years ago. I woke up 10 years ago finally realized why all those brainwashed zombies walking around

This seems like a stupid concept to me. Weimar Germany wasn't a particularly isolating culture. If people lack religion and are unhappy then they will look for some religion to fill the void. That's all there is to it.
