I'm stupid in the underwear subject but the gusset is suppose to cover the vagenal area. Some have the gusset to far forward while others are to far back. The well known brands are better but cost more and the Chinese crap is the issue, my wife showed one pair where the gusset covered the butt hole and just part of the vagenal area. Having lunch with my wife and co workers is like a pot luck discussion of who knows what.

I know a lot about bra fittings, and random shit with sewing, but the different components of underwear was just never really something that I questioned outside of whether or not it was breathable.

I'll be damned though, I googled after asking you and there's like this whole underground world of discussion on it. I guess I can by-proxy thank her/her coworkers.

Well your better off than I, I know nothing about woman's clothing other than some items can be washed and some need dry cleaning.
