The issue is those people don't think. Whatever the TV tells them is what they believe, and they cannot fathom otherwise. Hence "Trust the science", they can only appeal to authority for their beliefs. If you were a liberal (real liberal values) in the early 2000's, this is everything you shat on Evangelical Christians for as they said Pokemon and Harry Potter were heresy and evolution wasn't real. The same psychological phenomenon is still present, but instead it's left wingers taking late night TV hosts and anyone wearing a suit or a lab coat on MSM as the word of god.

Liberals nowadays only trust the science they are explicitly told to trust.

For a fun time try to explain what the "Scientific Method" is to a person who says they only believe in science.

It's like talking to somebody who claims to be Christian, but has never opened a bible.

At first I thought their version of "science" was like their weird religion (because it sure as hell wasn't the science I was taught in school twenty years ago.) It's less of a faith to these people and more of "Please. I just want to fit in. I'm good. See? I do what I'm told. I'm a good sheep. Why are you being mean to me with these questions? What the heck did I ever do to you?!"

The more facts you provide to contradict them the angrier they get. It's nearly impossible to talk to these people because they don't even believe in what they're saying.

Scientism:

A blind faith dogma in the benevolence of "experts" and corporations making obscene profits from their allegedly safe but very secret and privatized so-called "science".

Authentic science is a transparent discovery and open verification process (not settled) of elimination based on a hypothesis. Since many factors may corrupt this process it must be openly verifiable to eliminate junk science from legitimate results.
