What happened at the US Capitol on Wednesday is inexcusable. The violent attempt by painted, horn-wearing idiots to disrupt the democratic process and overturn the election result is appalling. This behaviour is rightly being condemned across the political spectrum, but the most vituperative, hysterical censure is coming from a certain segment of the leftist elite.

This is the same leftist elite who, for the summer months of 2020, said nothing but platitudinous bromides while numerous US cities burned down; who, after Trump was elected in 2016, screeched about the election being stolen by the Russians; who, after the Brexit vote in 2016, immediately demanded a second referendum because they didn't get the result that they wanted.

I can't help but feel that, terrible and moronic though this 'storming of the Capitol' is, we shouldn't be surprised. After months of refusing to condemn the violence, looting, and chaos resulting from the death of George Floyd, how can anyone condemn the Trump rioters with a straight face?
