It could been stored poorly, exposed to strong light or heat.

Perhaps that could have been the issue, though I don't see how that could've happened within the store. The two-liters aren't kept cold, but the building is never hot inside — and it's starting to get cold around here anyways.

Those bottles move around more than you think - especially if they’re at the dollar store, they could be surplus supply from a nearby chain supermarket that didn’t sell them all on time.

The bottles could have been taken out of the fridge and left in the sun for example, while fresh bottles were loaded into the fridge at the og supermarket. Then the bottles get moved again to another supermarket or dollar store.
