Many detractors have called into question Francis' adherence to the Catholic faith, to the Christian belief even, but the problem might be deeper: his reading comprehension.
His newest encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, Chapter 3:
"...Francis went to meet the Sultan with the same attitude that he instilled in his disciples: if they found themselves “among the Saracens and other nonbelievers”, without renouncing their own identity they were not to “engage in arguments or disputes, but to be subject to every human creature for God’s sake”.[3]..."
Now, remembering that Francis went to the Sultan to convert him to Catholicism, this citation sounds a bit off. So let's go see the note, which points to chapter 16 of the Franciscan rule, AD 1221, called "non bollata" as the Pope in charge approved a different version.
The chapter is named "About those [Franciscans] that travel among the Saracens and the other INFIDELS". (So ecumenic of S.Francis, to outright call them infidels, huh?)
"The friars who then go among the infidels [JEEZ, AGAIN?], can behave spiritually among them in two ways. One way is that they do not be litigious or quarrel, but are subject to every human creature for God's sake (1Pt 2,13) and confess to being Christians."
Wait, this is still off. "Every human creature", does it mean every human they meet? babies, women, old guys? Isn't that strange? Because Creatura means object of creation. Thankfully He left a citation, Let's go see the citation then.
12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.
13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority,
14 or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.
AHA! so human creature likely means human creation, the systems of authority, and S. Francis ordered to respect HUMAN authorities in the places he goes to visit, which is exactly the opposite of submitting to the religion and culture of the infidels. In fact his rule continues:
"7 The other way is that when they see that they like the Lord, they will announce the word of God so that they may believe in God the all-powerful Father and Son and Holy Spirit, Creator of all things, and in the Redeemer and Savior Son, and be baptized, and make themselves Christians, for if one is not reborn by water and holy Spirit cannot enter the kingdom of God (Gv 3.5)."
In two words, Infidels GTFO.
So, the verdict is sadly that our Pope can't muster the time to check a couple citations, or that he cannot read properly. Of course, should he not clarify or insist in this spectacularly bad doctrine, and couple these ideas with actions, he would end up over the heresy line into apostasy. Never go full apostasy.
So, people, if you are not yet for excommunicatio latae sententiae, at least be very careful when the pope blesses you in that overcomplicated Latin, get ready to dodge a botched one, who knows, you might end up a mohameddan or a Thunbergian.
