It's hard to tell but I'm not 100% sure he's a liberal. Mainstream liberals wouldn't reference the riots at all, or if they did, they would try to justify them or even portray them as "necessary".

This is his position in the article:

The rioting and looting caused him to leave the city. That sounds like a condemnation to me - he stops short of criticizing the protests, but he exposes and criticizes the real problem of rioters. He could be a centrist or someone trying to cover his ass since any criticism of the protests gets you cancelled.

he just cuts and runs like a coward.

At the very least, he is no longer paying taxes to and thus passively supporting New York City. I would never shame someone who left NYC as "cutting and running".
