It could get very lonely, but I've started seeing very rural life as my ideal. I think I'd want to find the right person/people to do that with before setting off, rather than going it completely alone. But right now everyone could use a lot more nature and a lot less hyper-connectedness.

Yep. The main thing holding me back from moving rurally would be lack of family. Moving away from urban areas would be great for my peace of mind, but I don't see much point if I end up as a hermit lol

The best thing about being cut off from civilization is having to get creative with your time. It's surprisingly hard to ever have downtime and relax when you live more on your own, there's going to be a lot to take care of. You could also always open a sort of hostel for work exchange. Which brings friends, business, and a helping hand. Go for it, yo. It's crazy to see how much more control we have over our lives when living in a rural area. It's fricken awesome when you get your life back in your own hands. (:

What are some of the things that need to be done? Just curious!

I remememer when the internet used to be a seperate thing from reality. people used to realize it was the fucking internet. it has been completley blurred into reality for some people. this is binary 1s and 0s. this is not fucking real life. I can't hurt you by making pixels appear on your screen. Kids are getting arrested for what they post online...

duckduckgo kid arrest for facebook post or online post

one got arrested for posting a gun emoji and a cop emoji next to each other...

edit: one got sent to prison for sarcastic facebook comments https://www.rt.com/usa/teen-facebook-arrested-prison-628/ then says they locked him nude in solitary confinement and someone beat em up. america fuck yeah!

it's realer now though. people have gotten swatted and doxxed and stuff. this stuff we're writing here is forever in a lot of ways, and the tech to deanonymize people is only going to get better. people you share interests with are gonna visit the same forums and end up being part of your RL. it's good to be careful and prudent online like anywhere else, it's all part of the same reality even if it's somewhat anonymous.

    [–]iraelmossadreddit 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

swatting isn't something just online. people could spoof phone calls long before the internet. they just used the internet to find that information which probaby was easily found at fault of the victim. I used to think the information on the internet was forever but it could actually be very temporary. a lot of the information is on magnetic hard disks that will not even last thousands of years like the dead sea scrolls. one emp could wipe everything out. maybe the next pissed off goggle employyee will run through the server farm with a emp blaster instead of shooting up people. they would need to implate the whole internet onto some type of metal like the sci3nt0loogiiszzts do lhaha... I realize the internet is real...but I think it's virtual and not real too.

5G being installed worldwide right now

It's really messed up how criticism of 5G got demonized. I can't remember a single person asking for 5G - 4G is fast enough. It was all cell companies pushing it.

But I did hear people making fun of the claim "5G causes coronavirus!" Nevermind that virtually no one was actually claiming that. But because the media was able to slander anyone criticizing 5G as an idiot, 5G suddenly became a-okay.

try to find some where away from coal/nuclear plants and check for chemical plants/farms/factories near by. you want clean water. nearly everything is almost a fucking wasteland. in south alabama all the fish spots have fucking advisories. probaly turn into superman if you eat enough from the radiation.

This is a great thread. Honestly I am pushing people to move out of cities. I think that all cities are going to end up like Seattle, San Francisco, Detroit, etc. They will be terrible places to live, and living there means you support them with your tax dollars.

The only reason to live in a city is if you are making substantially more money in a city than outside of one, or if being in a city provides you with essential cultural opportunities that you can't get elsewhere (for example maybe you run a business that can only work in a city, like a restaurant, or maybe you go to a prestigious college in the city or something)

Let me know if you'd like to discuss this further. I'm considering making a sub about it.

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (5 children)

how do you have the tech necessary for security if you don't keep cities? we already fled to the suburbs, I'm not sure this is the right strategy to address what's happening.

    [–]Aureus 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (4 children)

I'm not sure exactly what tech you mean. And I'm totally open for debate... I understand there's a lot of drawbacks.

    [–][deleted] 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I mean the tech to defend a country from foreign invasion by powerful and technically advanced outsiders. I don't think living like the Saami is enough to survive and hold the land, it's happened over and over. Ainu. That indigenous minority on Taiwan I think. Hadza. Tibet. The technologically inferior group slowly (or quickly) gets marginalized. Though I guess some have survived against a technologically superior enemy via guerrilla methods and intelligence.

If you can do the tech necessary through teleworking then that's fine... but what about stuff that's not just idea work? What about biotech? What about physics experiments? What about supercomputers? Can you do all that without cities?

What what happens to the cities if we abandon them? Who holds them? What will they do with that power? Although I guess that won't be such a big deal if they do all become like Detroit, but where does that leave us needing to do high tech development to survive if all cities become like that?

I certainly think it's fine if many pursue a more rural life, but it seems to me like we need cities too.

I'm not like a master strategist or whatever. Goodness knows I'd love to live the rural "pagan" dream forever just growing plants and happy people. So just take this as some person's thoughts about it, I'm not an expert or authority or whatever. I have seen some discussion on this topic elsewhere too though.

    [–]Aureus 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

You raise some good points. I'm mostly thinking from a cultural standpoint and telling people to move out of cities is a generalization that there are many exceptions to. I miscalculated as well, because there are still some good cities left. I would urge everyone to move out of cities like Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, St Louis, New York, and similar however.

It's important that people think deeply about where they live, because the environment will affect their children and their taxes will go to support the state. I can't imagine how any culturally aware person can choose to live in California, knowing that their taxes will support widespread corruption, unless they are making bank at a job they couldn't do anywhere else.

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

I guess I'm thinking at some point we need to reverse this trend. Actively work towards retaking territory somehow, rather than always retreating. And figuring out how to hold territory too. Although I suppose every move is both ceding old territory and taking new territory. We're going to run out of places to run to eventually, and it's nice to be able to actually build something intergenerationally without having to move all the time. I'm sad about all the beautiful cities that have been lost... I want to find a way to stop that stuff from happening.

Oh, I absolutely agree. People moving into self-imposed isolation doesn't help. People need to be congregating together and peacefully organizing. Even in blue areas, it would help if people would connect with their conservative neighbors rather than stay cooped-up at home.

This is by far the biggest impediment: conservatives simply do not know how to organize, and are discouraged to even speak their minds to people who might be sympathetic. I imagine there's a lot of conservative-majority neighborhoods that can't collectively recognize this, because every resident is too afraid to reach out to their neighbors. That's really sad.

Ideally, I envision neighborhoods working almost like political activist groups. They would get together regularly to discuss goings-on in their community, and work together to lobby local politicians into meeting their needs.

    [–]PencilPusher55[S] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

Absolutely! Thanks for the compliment, too.

Let me ask you this - I speak of living off the grid in terms of separating yourself from civil unrest. By nature I am good at computers, good at tech stuff but not a "survival" guy at all. I think I'd be dead in a week if I had to construct my own water filtration system or hunt LOL.

With that being said - How far do you think most people will take this? Yourself included. Will you just move to an isolated region or go full on "BUG OUT"?

    [–]Aureus 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

No worries. For a lot of people this may simply mean moving to a conservative state and living in the suburbs.

It depends on what people want. I advocate for everyone to move to conservative states. Living in the suburbs, towns, or exurbs is ideal. I think that telework will make moving around the country and living rurally a lot easier.

    mesh networking might help

I don't think it's truly possible to be independent. We depend on each other. Not in the least for national defense from hostile outside forces. Maybe "disaster resilience" or something might be better. Not having to go to the grocery store for food and water seems nice. Being able to not depend on people who are trying to hurt and control you in malicious ways seems nice.

I just don't think it's possible to survive on your own long-term, unless you have a big enough community that can protect yourselves too.

    [–]Aureus 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

I don't think it's truly possible to be independent. We depend on each other.

I agree. 100% independence is kind of a pipe dream - you can't provide all of your own food and resources, unless you are a skilled survivalist in an abundant landscape or you are very wealthy.

I promote self-sufficiency, but I also want people to become "co-sufficient". This means being part of a community where everyone does what they're best at.

Do you have any other resources on mesh networking btw?

I don't really know about it, I was just looking around at decentralized tech a bit when I was worried the internet was going to go down. There are a few other articles on wikipedia that mention other projects besides that particular network that might be of interest. It looks like there are mesh networks set up in several places now.

I don't know if it's the best technology, I'm not part of this tech scene. I was just looking around and this is one thing I found, and the story about how it worked during Hurricane Sandy seemed pretty neat.

    or you are very wealthy

wealth requires other people to pay to be of any help. (unless you store your wealth in grain... or healthy children... but then we're back to interdependence)

    [–]Aureus 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I was envisioning someone who used their wealth to buy a lifetime supply of freeze-dried food, or an entire farm and all the automated equipment to run it. But yeah it would be impractical for almost everyone. Co-sufficiency is the way

    [–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

it was always appealing, but the only reason people dont do it is because you need money and a job, and jobs are always near cities, as well its hard to get land, u need to buy it

    [–]D0z 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

A lot of people are talking about doing just that. Once everything blows over, I'm moving to a cabin with my girlfriend, and I'll get my daily internet kick via satellite.

    [–]StBlops2cel_is_Lord 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I live on a mountain farm, off the grid. Solar panels, propane, well water...my internet comes from my phone. No mail or pizza delivery, but millions of trees and birds. Fantastic! I'm also looking for a new GF...who wants to move to Hawaii?

it was always appealing, any loner low tier introvert incel male living in the city would reasonably dream of leaving all the normies and living alone in nature. however, it is not easy to do and you need money and resources to do it

    [–][deleted] 0 insightful - 1 fun0 insightful - 0 fun1 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Agenda 21 will prevent this, all poor and politically unimportant citizens will be forced to live in cities.
