because they're not a singular race. they are multiple ethnic groups and/or a religion. there's brown and black jews, not just the ashkenazi/european.

The special word is because they think they are special.

racism implies race. there is no "jewish" race. so that's one pedantic issue for starters. There are also other reasons why, like tons of money going into "anti-semitic" awareness. maybe there's also an element of people wanting this special classification.

Like a user said, why so much special treament for jews?

Jews are considered their own race in US law. Seperate from whites.
You can take a DNA test to get citizenship in israel.

They're not, but they should be. Arabs and Hispanics are often lumped in with Whites as well.

Arabs and Hispanics are often lumped in with Whites as well.

Makes sense since they both have high white admixture. It's a gray zone. Biology doesn't have clear cut lines.

Pedants would have a field day with "antisemitism" even more. Not only not all jews are semites (as you noted) but the absolute majority of semites (arabs) is not included as well.

Because it has a particular history going back through the middle ages with a specific set of myths attached which is different to just not liking people different to you.

Because unfortunately the English language lacks a good word for being against a religious/cultural group. The word antisemitism was coined to give a word to the specific problems faced by Jews. To my knowledge nobody has done the same for Islam, for example. (People tend to say you are "racist" if you are anti-Islamic, ignoring that Islam stretches across all races.)

This is an area where a new word would be great to have.

[–][deleted] 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

The term was invented by German anti-semites to make it sound more intellectual. Before that it was known as Jew-hatred.

It's a good thing to be islamophobic.

I forgot about "islamophobic". You know, I haven't heard that one in a little while.

Edit: I also hate *phobic, on technical grounds. Just because you're against something doesn't mean you are scared of it.

All arabs are semitic. The word anti-semitism used in the current context of criticising Judaism makes zero sense.

Special people get a special word. It’s rhetorical kung fu used to flip from defense to offense without having to address an argument directly.

[–]GaiusHelenMohiam 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Because Jew-haters thought “antisemism” sounded less unsavory.
