But why were these protestors in the middle of the street, in the middle of the night?
Anyone could have ran a car into them.

There are videos of road-works, that show how people run into barriers (etc), even with big warnings.

I thought the same thing. It's super dangerous working construction at 1:30am. Even with huge flashing lights, loud noises, and bright yellow vests people still get killed via motor vehicle hitting them every year while doing construction.
