Agreed. I really hated Reddit's "redesign". It's borderline unusable. You've got to click three times just to get to the comments section now. I immediately disabled the new theme.

It takes away the character from individual subs as well - customisability is much lower than with full control over the CSS.

Part of what makes this site like old reddit is the userbase -this place is very similar to what Reddit was (albeit 8 years ago, so not "no long ago").

The best thing you can do right now is to advertise saidit on reddit (and other places) whenever you can.
Also, link relevant saidit posts on any platform which hasn't shadowbanned those links yet.

How s saidit going to compete with ruqqus?

[–]Extract 12 insightful - 2 fun12 insightful - 1 fun13 insightful - 2 fun -  (15 children)

Buy having a way better UX, and far (faaaaar) better architecture, allowing it to not only not crush every day but actually withstand DDOS with relative ease?

Edit:
There is a good reason reddit isn't banning ruqqus links, but does so for saidit.

ruqqus is down, yeah, that's why I went for saidis + because the interface was 100% familiar. But I'm personally 50/50 on the old interface - I kinda like the modern look, even if the old one has less distractions. I worry most people would prefer the modern look of ruqqus and getting additional hosting infrustructure + optimizing the site is just a matter of time and they seem to be working on it right now.

From what I understand, their problems are in terms of architecture are pretty deep.
I am actually unsure people prefer modern look - I, for once, cannot stand the new reddit, and have had old.reddit.com turned on almost all the time.
Ruqqus interface shares the same problems - its lacks the simplicity and elegance the old reddit interface has. I truly believe the only reason it's more popular for now is because unlike magnora7, the creators (and users) of ruqqus actually take significant action to promote it everywhere they can.
If the users of saidit (us) did the same, I believe it'd overtake ruqqus in no time.

i think you're spot on about ruqqus. they were talking about how a new js frontend is going to speed up the site, hah. I do wish them luck, and there are plenty of Redditors around to fill up both sites. The site policies are a big differentiator too.

Out of curiosity - I read in your post on r/redditalternatives at one point - is this the current repo for saidit?

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (10 children)

yep, we've got the same link down there in the footer

Wow, for some reason I always thought Reddit was written in PHP rather than python (and c).

Went over some of the models and controllers - the code seems well structured, but it's a shame it's clearly not documented (I assume some internal documentation existed in Reddit Inc. itself that never got published).

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

They documented a bit of stuff on the wiki, but it was geared much more toward a developer and not production install. They also started neglecting the open source version for years before they threw in the towel, because they had to unmerge all of their secret shit to push the latest open source code live. So they'd do like 1 big open source commit every few months. They left missing cron jobs and config params in the config file and all sorts of shit. It's been a rough few years getting it this far. And for all of that work, it's still tied to ubuntu 14 and commit X from a goddamn facebook repo from 2015.

It was token open source, the bastards.

Reddit was originally written in LISP and Aaron Swartz was the one to port it from LISP to python, and that's the code we use today

I call ruqqus '503.com'

By working correctly ?

503 Service Unavailable Ruqqus is currently down. Please try again later.

This is the happy medium between where Reddit is now and 4chan, which is too stripped down of a bulletin board for me to get much out of.

Makes me miss old Reddit more.

[–]forgottenpasswordguy 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

This older style interface is much, much better

[–]Dashing-Dove 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Information density with this older Reddit format is better; there's simply more content viewable on screen at once, and it's a clean design with subtle but effective division between posts. Another upside is that page loading is quick, while Ruqqus is still riddled with 503 service errors days after the exodus. I hope they recover, but for stability and ease of use, Saidit all the way.

I wish I had lived in Paris or NYC right after the war, when the jazz scene was really getting started.

Not nostalgic for me, I stuck with old.reddit.com when the redesign came out.

[–]Extract 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I honestly don't get people who can stand that horrid abomination that is new.reddit.com

[–]Light_Aura 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Me too, I can't stand the redesign.

[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Avoided the redesign at all costs on reddit. I do think reddit's old design (and hence saidit's) is a bit dated now, but any redesign needed to keep the simplicity and straightforwardness of its function. The redesign is just a convoluted mess designed solely to put as many ads in front of eyes as possible. It was horrendous.

eta: I actually suspect there is a reason for reddit's shitty redesign and the constant backend fuckups that happen there now with duplication comments everywhere - they just can't get the staff. My theory is the management of reddit is so painfully woke that not many developers can stand working for them. I get the impression the same is happening at places like Google. They just aren't innovating any more.

[–]galaxybrain 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I always forced Reddit to the old site, so it looks exactly the same to me. It certainly takes a huge dump on Reddit's redesign.

[–]PencilPusher55 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

I completely agree. I used to read those Reddit comment chains and all of them were just stupid shit like “just take my up vote!“. It felt so fake and put on. Knowing how nasty those people could really be.

This feels more genuine.
