cool example is this old recording of Mckinley, where you can hear the famous mid-atlantic accent, which back in the early 20th century if you were rich or a celebrity you had to learn how to use to navigate high society.

Not really, the audio back then was pretty bad. People used that accent during speeches,interviews,movies, and commentary. No one used that accent in conversation. The mid altlantic accent made it easier to hear what they were saying. As audio quality improved, the accent went extinct.
