Hear me out.

Generally the concensus seems to be when initially visiting saidit you're underwhelmed by the participation rate and the how little the vote counts are in relation to Reddit.

For the participation rate, there's little you can do, and little I'd personally want to be done. I'd sooner no comments than the usual bullshit Redditspeak one liners repeated ad-nauseum.

I like saidit for that it seems to follow the quote "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Which in contrast to the kindergarten that is Reddit, is so fucking refreshing.

What you can change is the vote count. In fact you can upvote twice here. Do so. Even if the view expressed isn't in line with your own.

What I'm trying (poorly) to say is make this place feel less of a ghost town, and don't fall in to the hivemind trap of Reddit. It's up to us to make the alternative an alternative.

Rather than blindly upvoting everything, upvote accordingly. Also, try to post stuff in various subs and add comments.

For this site to truly work, we need to forget reddit. I'd bet most people are here because of what reddit has become.

Thing is Reddit was initially an interesting and functional place.

The vote system was democratic, and enabled genuinely popular or worthy posts.

Maybe it's because I was there from its nascent days, but I always recall it have a very open feel. The system worked essentially.

The problem wasn't the machine, but the user. Heavy handed moderation that has become literal censorship has ruined it.

It would be good if there was a natural kind of "view count" that went up when somebody clicked on a thread or passed a comment. That would help show where people are most interested in as well.

Owners should run an advertising campaign for Saidit on Youtube, Facebook, etc. I know it would go against many peoples view, but it would really help to attract some new people. Look what China did with Tik Tok, from nowhere it became incredibly popular. And Saidit is really nice, invested money would pay for itself.

Disagree. Slashdot has low vote counts and does fine.

Saidit's value is dialectical quality. Indiscriminate upvoting undermines that.

Saidit's weakness is inability to downvote bad information. Indiscriminate upvoting exacerbates that.

Dialectic is always less popular than Reddit. Saidit doesn't directly compete with Reddit. Be patient about growth and focus on quality instead. Influence isn't correctly measured by clicks.

    You can game the Slashdot moderation system by creating dozens of accounts, using them to mod each other up, meta moderate a lot to get a ton of mod points, and then suppress dissent in any political thread, which is most of them.

    I agree, more activity means this community more closely reflect what the users want to say and read. There's no vote fuzzing here, so every vote counts exactly once. A person voting something from 1 to 2 can be the difference of it seeing the front page later, or not. Votes and comments have a lot of power on saidit

    My reality involves upvoting only what I like. So , you have only three choices, a wasteland of unmarked posts, users clicking on everything they see for the sake of making each other feel better, or the automatic change of scenery..It's not something I am pulling out of my ass,, many socials even use post bots to make a better appearance.

    If we want this place to be exactly like the existing social media including an arrogant and manipulative belief that users must be tricked into engaging at all cost...
