Hey /u/magnora7 & /u/d3rr check out this alt to YouTube I just came across. The UI is pretty rough but it's totally neutral on content and trying to minimize expenses / money so they're not beholden to others. Interesting project.

Seems like a dead project but I love the focus on trying to crack the monetization issue. I think PeerTube let's you add a Patreon link to your vids and that's about it.

Interesting enough -- after I pressed the submit button on this post, I was offered "more discussions" or something like that, and I clicked it and found that someone who must be the dev for this project has been posting here about it. His sub is [his handle]projects. His handle is something like x0x or something like that.

Oh yeah, cool. We'll see if they respond.

Hello! /u/portcity is really excited about your project. What has it been like single handedly competing with the big guys? Do you worry about storage costs? How do people discover your site?

I called your project dead on this post, apologies, it looks like you are active and even have some really awesome content.

      What an awesome response, thanks.

I'm able to get really good deals on vps's and turn them into a cdn.

So you just have tons of servers with like 30gb hard drives each? That's pretty clever. I would have expected you to be using block/object storage or something.

They claimed at one point to be spending $5,000 a month on Azure just to get the throughput needed (at that point you try caching).

I remember this insanity well. I was on there nagging them to port to linux for cheaper hosting... not sure if they ever did. But yes, they had to have been missing the boat on caching somehow. I imagine that Putt didn't have the dev skills to fix it, and the first dev was long gone. It's a good example of how tech decisions can absolutely cripple your whole company/site.

I dig your minimalist CSS... it could use a bit of polish from a designer person but whatever. I like your 2x menu and the hamburger customization options.

I've never heard of pic8 or jssocial, i'll check it out. I will start recommending your site in addition to PeerTube. Your search functionality is better than BitChute already. Here's my PeerTube instance I'm running for $10/mo. It's kinda dead, but I was one of the first American instances. I also got a commit accepted that lets you use block storage with PeerTube.

It's mostly for collecting videos that would otherwise disappear. https://tube.4aem.com/video-channels/fedfuckersinc_channel/videos (no a/b testing on my CSS and it shows!).
