Yes - I like reading news most of the time, though this summer I am catching up with a plan to read a number of books I've not previously had time to finish.

BTW: I see that you and /u/AmericanMuskrat like to cook. I recommend this:

It's from: 'Dadima's: Celebrating Grandmother's Wisdom Through Indian Cooking', by Anneeka Ludhra

Sure - but I suspect we all have very different tastes. It would be interesting.

No. There is a collection of cool books here: https://saidit.net/s/runebooks

A book a month, or every two months, on fringe subjects, conspiracy stuff, political manipulaiton, some of them interesting, 2 votes per book and 4 users there now. I wonder if these subjects would appeal to most Saiditors. 'Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion' is known to many Saiditors, I think, but perhaps read for information rather than enjoyment, like a number of the other books. The book club could perhaps link to the Z-library, which runebooks does. /s/books lacks participation. Perhaps a book club would have to be promoted in /s/all with a sticky post to /s/books each month or each 2 weeks, if magnora could be bothered to do this, /u/FuckYourMom. Some of the discussion could be in the Chat.

Who do we want to lead the club?

What I've seen at Saidit over the past 2 years is that a strategy must be considered for any new venture on such a small website. What I've noticed:

1 - you could lead the group, as it's your idea (Sci Fi seems to be enjoyed by others here.)

2 - new subs die a death; it's better to connect with existing subs that have more than 10 active users. /s/books is not very active, but would be more active than a new sub.

3 - popular subs that could potentially host a club are: /s/askSaidit, /s/whatever

4 - any new post will have to get votes right way in order to be visible

5 - one of the mods could be asked to help promote the book club by pinning posts at the top (they do this at Reddit to set up discussion threads about popular topics. At Saidit, the pinned post would be important for recruitment of readers

6 - timing: much of active Saidit is on Pacific time, and new posts should be times for approximately 6 pm Pacific time (unless an earlier time is better on some occasions)

7 - get people 'vested' by discussing this with them in AskSaidit and in the Chat/subscribed - an initlal target of 5 readers might be sustainable, as readers come and go

8 - read the room - what do people want to read and discuss?

9 - use the Chat in coordination with the book club sub, which I recommend should be /s/AskSaidit

10 - give readers 2 weeks to read the book, at least initially, expecting a lul in discussions in the 2nd week

11 - readers should be users who engage with a number of other users on a regular basis - in order to build interest in the club (recommendations from others will be the only way it'll develop)

12 - take the time to engage with all of the discussions about the book

13 - select a book that one can get at z-library

14 - try to avoid highly divisive subjects, but welcome some of the edgy subjects, because controversy helps build dialogue

          hope this helps

I think a question about this at /s/AskSaidit should raise some good ideas, even if by 10 or 20 people. If there's a bit of controversy, there could be many more comments. I tend to read non-fiction science related books, which I doub't otherw will find interesting, save two of three here who've apparently studied physics. But I have a lot of interests.

As you know, much of the engagement on Saidit is political, but the favorite books mentioned in the Chat tend to be science fiction (or at least that's that I've seen). If you start the process, I'll try to drum up interest.
