Not gonna lie, red "delicious" apples are the worst kind of apple I've ever ate in my entire life.
[–][deleted] 8 insightful - 5 fun8 insightful - 4 fun9 insightful - 4 fun9 insightful - 5 fun - 2 years ago (25 children)
Ugh. I hate red delicious apples. They're grainy and disgusting, and taste like shit in pie. Granny Smith reign supreme for me, but Pink Lady and Fuji rank up there.

My top 5 apples: opal, pink lady, kanzi, lemonade, granny smith
[–][deleted] 6 insightful - 4 fun6 insightful - 3 fun7 insightful - 3 fun7 insightful - 4 fun - 2 years ago (3 children)
I think that I've had opal, but what do lemonade and kanzi taste like?
[–]goobandit 6 insightful - 3 fun6 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 2 fun7 insightful - 3 fun - 2 years ago (2 children)
Lemonade are about as tart as granny smith but still sweet. Kanzi are very light and crisp, they’re usually smaller so it’s good for a quick snack.
[–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun - 2 years ago (1 child)
I wonder if I've seen these in store around here. I don't ever recall lemonade being an option

This is the first year I’ve seen them

All the sweetest, worst for you varieties.

Aw goddammit

Sweet tango, smitten, kanzi, ... All the corporate sponsored apples are pretty damn good. After they fucked up the red delicious and collapsed the apple industry not only did the government bail them out, but all these new delicious apple strains were developed in partnership with corporations
And gala and fuji and some of the older varieties are still good.

I’m a sucker for mutant stone fruit. Cherry plums, plum-apricot things, weird apples, I kept buying grāples one year and have never seen them again.
[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 4 fun4 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 4 fun - 2 years ago (3 children)
Me too! Although grapples are sadly just regular apples soaked in grape juice and not some freakishly delicious hybrid.
Yeah wtf I just looked it up too hahaha I’m such a tard! What did I think it was?
[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 4 fun4 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 4 fun - 2 years ago (1 child)
Yuck, I bought those one time and thought they were disgusting.

It's my favorite lurker!

I ain't never heard of an opal apple (try saying that five times fast), but I'll try to remember this list for later.
[–]goobandit 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun - 2 years ago (0 children)
I remember I tried it because it was the first time I saw a yellow apple that wasn’t golden delicious, which I didn’t care for.

They're grainy and disgusting,
Yep, texture is important for me.
Granny Smith reign supreme for me, but Pink Lady and Fuji rank up there.
I agree with that statement 100%
[–][deleted] 5 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 2 fun6 insightful - 3 fun - 2 years ago (5 children)
Yeah, I'm weird about texture too. Especially with meats. Have you ever gotten chicken tenders with the tendon attached (Ithink they usually are for that cut), and it have that repulsive slimy strip or like.. harder and bouncy in the cooked tender? Blech.
[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun - 2 years ago (4 children)
Yeah, the skin is gross too, and I quit eating pork because there's so much fat on it, which has the grossest texture ever (also, I don't really like the taste of the meat). Everyone thinks I'm a Muslim, but I'll eat BBQ pork if the fat's been cut off!
[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun - 2 years ago (3 children)
I don't mind the skin if it's ultra fried and not grody. Pork is usually pretty nasty too, and yes-- especially the fat. I damn near burn bacon before eating it. Have/had you noticed bacon tasting off with a lot of brands? There's a couple that don't have "the taste," but with the problem ones there's something just.. gamey? I don't even know how to describe it. I wonder if you would have liked the BBQ pork we got the other day. It had all the fat trimmed, tasted incredibly, well seasoned, smoky(ey?) and even had a fewbits that were crisped slightly.

Same! :P I literally tell people to burn it; it has to be black. For some reason, I like bitter food, and burnt bacon is sufficiently bitter without being inedible or gross.
Have/had you noticed bacon tasting off with a lot of brands?
I don't eat enough bacon to be able to tell the difference.

Sounds nice.

I don't go full black, I get it to where the fat is completely browned and crisped. That little bit of bitterness there is nice though, I just can't handle it being borderline charcoal levels of burnt.
Hormel Black Label is a no-go, and iirc Hormel is just gross with bacon across the board. The publix brand Greenwise has some organic that tastes pretty nice and doesn't have the nasty flavor.

LOL, that's how I like it.

How about royal gala or jazz? My favourite is pink lady
[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun - 2 years ago (0 children)
I think that I've had jazz. Those are another tart, but sweet one? I know that I've had gala and they're alright, but I don't think that I've noticed royal gala. Pink lady is delicious. I forgot about honeycrisp, but those are lovely too.

Do they still sell Golden Delicious apples in America? They are my favourite apples
[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 4 fun4 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 3 fun5 insightful - 4 fun - 2 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, my grandparents got some a few months ago.
Yep, they have the consistency of a pear but the taste of an apple, reminds me of asian pears.
[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun - 2 years ago (1 child)
Not sure if they're still sold, but the red delicious apple I knew was from Washington State, had no brand name, and was a rectangular shaped, bright red, delicious apple, unlike that shown in the video. If those are gone, that's a big loss. This video is very well done. I tend to get organic apples at Whole Foods &c, and haven't noticed the brand names he mentions, and I can't remember the last time I saw a red delicious apple. Washington varieties are here. I suppose my favorite apple is much like a tart version of a McIntosh apple, much like those I grew up picking from a tree in the front yard. In addition to what he says in the video, though there are now 7,500 cultivars of apples, I recall a couple decades ago being told by a grocer that there were 125 varieties of apples in the US that he considered when buying them for the grovery. I suspect that these varieties multiplied exponentially after corporate greed was involved in manipulating cultivars for pretty apples.
I think they can call anything a "red delicious" so maybe the original is delicious, but what you buy at the store is quite likely a crappy fake. It's like if you could sell Dr. Thunder (worthless garbage) as Dr. Pepper (the best drink ever).
