We need to stop every person in the executive branch of being able to use emergency powers, it needs to fucking stop. It's so out of control, we now see the abuses of an idea meant for protection and good. We have a government that rules by legislation, not by decree

Texas has had 4,140,000 cases of COVID-19 resulting in 68,075 deaths.

So far.

For comparison 2,996 people died in the September 11 attacks of 2001, which resulted in significant losses of freedom, a lot more substantial than putting on a mask when you go out.

(You still have to put on pants when you go out. No one seems to be complaining about that).

statistics are not data. these are completely different forms of expression. one is unarguable fact, the other is a vehicle of personal politics.

I'm pretty sure that's accountancy. Different faculty. I did mathematics in the science faculty. Accountancy is usually taught in the business faculty.

There's mathematical structures where that is true. Not very interesting if by 1 you mean the multiplicative identity, and by "+" you mean a binary operation over which multiplication is distributive. Which is the normal meaning in group theory.

I can't think of one that has more than the one element.

But while this journey down discrete mathematics memory lane is fun, this has nothing to do with statistics.

I understand monkey's frustration that many people don't understand statistics. It's good to talk with other people with a basic understanding of sampling, bias and significance testing. I was just letting him know that if you uses technical jargon to explain his points formally, I will understand.

One side is making mandates, the other is saying "no thanks to the mandates". Hardly the same. One side is putting people out of business and forcing people in to homelessness, the other is allowing businesses to operate normally.

    Is that generally true?

    For instance, laws ban me from releasing sarin gas near my neighbor's fence, when the wind is blowing towards their property.

    But even though I can't do that, I think that it's not true to say that "there is no freedom". I have other freedoms. I can plant whatever trees I want on my side of the fence, for instance.
