A while ago there were around 20 people on the far side, holding flashlights and moving pretty close to the cone. Their lights were visible to the edges of both sides.

I poked lava with a stick in Hawaii one time, and it was the (figuratively) coolest thing ever. If you ever have the chance to get up close, take it!
