I love these but I can’t help but assume they’re trust funders. Everything about them, the design of the house, and the people I know personally who do this, trust funders all the way down. It’s tight as fuck though and I want to build one at some point too.

Agreed it's sortof the same thing with tiny houses it looks great and doable until you realise the truth.

"This amazing tiny house with a deck only cost 35000!!"

But they live for free on a huge plot that the parents own. And the dad paid for electric and water lined to the house or the solar panels. And the uncle, whos a contractor, helped built it...etc etc

Yeah it’s like the $35k tiny house with $15k of new furniture in it.

Plus the storage unit to hold all their tools and shit.

[–][deleted] 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (8 children)

The mustache kinda gives it away, huh?

[–]goobandit 4 insightful - 3 fun4 insightful - 2 fun5 insightful - 3 fun -  (4 children)

Haha YES, but it’s the whole package coupled with the fact that trust funders like this NEVER tell you how much shit really costs. And I’m not an Eat the Rich commie either, like, this is not a dig at him or at trust funders. Just saying I know this dude. Not him exactly but I know “that guy” and this build including the land was not $65k.

[–][deleted] 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

I get you completely and agree! I saw everything you did haha, the mustache was just the icing on the cake. Still, beautiful home id love to have!

To build new is much more expensive, so I wouldn't be surprised it if it added up to $65k. He'd never get that in a sale - even before COVID.

I also know how much my deceased grandparents', now my uncle's, very large log home was valued at in 2011.

this build including the land was not $65k.

Land in rural areas without infrastructure (roads, sewage, electricity, telephone) can be had cheap. I used to know a prepper who'd buy land like that for when the SHTF.

[–]Canbot 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

It absolutely could be $65k. Land out in the middle of nowhere is cheap, and he doesn't say how much land he has. If he cut the boards himself from the local trees that would be huge savings. Not that he did that though. But if you aren't counting all the labor, tools, and don't have permits or codes to follow that is easily doable.

The mustache might also mean he's legit rural. Many trends and styles have actually reached out there, via markets, delivery, and of course the interwebs. Not to mention, many millionaires are building "way out there" in places like Muskoka, and their influence rubs of on the minions who actually do the hard labour. If he did this himself, there's a chance he's contracted on some bigger gigs. Without knowing his location and circumstances one can never know.

this place is 65 thousand dollar.. that includes the price of the land.. solar.. .. .. .. .. .. .. everythin!

what's missing? his cool ass friend that built the ramp?

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (5 children)

My uncle built one in the back of his property, though not as big nor as nice. He's not trust funder. At 16yo he also helped build the log home with my grandfolks at the front of the property 40 years ago.

[–]goobandit 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (4 children)

You said “Not as big nor as nice,” which is what I’m saying. Mildly joking about the mustache but the look of the whole thing. And in the case of your uncle, he has some skills under his belt, as well as property ownership. I’m going to assume uncle’s well situation was all sorted out before he started building, no? I’m just saying, I’ve known a lot of these dudes so I want to speculate that this guy is one of them.

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

I don't understand your speculation.

If I had a trust fund I wouldn't be so determined to be so remote, nor to live in a place like that. But I'm not him, so I don't know. He likely has reasons.

I'm following another guy, Woodness Goodness, who has taken a year and only just finished the interior. He's no trust fund guy, whatever that may mean, but seems to be a hipster and DIY guy, on a budget and has mentioned his work though I forget what it was. https://www.youtube.com/c/WoodnessGoodness/videos

My uncle didn't need a nice one with the house on the other side. Unless well occupied it will likely continue to be broken into by wandering locals. Muskoka is still pretty wild.

It’s because there are certain rich kids who grow up with excess and they get really into this style of off-grid and/or minimalist living.

Thanks for sharing that channel, I love these builds!

[–]JasonCarswell 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

You mean it's like a lifestyle-hobby-pastime-trend? I suppose if you're rebellious and go stark and minimal counter to your parents' complex opulence. Some go save the whales, I guess this is another way.

I peek in at a lot of alt-home channels. Many of them are bland day-to-day stuff or a project in process and few do concise summary videos worth sharing. The good ones I post in /s/Architecture, /s/DIY, and /s/OffGrid, and eventually I'll make a dedicated /s/Earthships for my fave. If compelled to I could start some /s/Architecture/wiki lists of alt-homes and related stuff - such as the channels I frequent.
