Article 3 of the proposed Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Bill will criminalise the communication of "abusive material" deemed likely to "stir up hate".
I have a real problem with this. Just to clarify in the first instance, I do not live in Scotland.
However, law that can criminalise speech that can purely subjective, depending on the feelings of those offended by them does not make good law, in my opinion. We already had laws which stop people from inciting violence, which is fair enough and is completely correct. We do not have the right to not offend people though, and this criminalisation of opinion, just because someone cannot engage with it, or even ignore it is a slippery slope.
As I have noticed recently, people get het up and angry over the smallest, perceived slight. Perceived in the point of my contention. Why should the law get involved when what is said is so subjective.
