I think that that is a myth. People in power are very good in hiding essential information. They even get rid of witnesses if necessary, or plant false stories.

We do not know much about:
Manhattan project, Mockingbird, Federal reserve, $21Trillion,
JFK, MLK, "Who started WW1?", "Hunting Hitler"..

And relevant now:
Jemen, Awan brothers, CIA-Torture, NSA, Wikileaks-emails, voting fraud/manipulations by internal agencies (both sides), Syria, Venezuela, Israel influence..
See how much the press is NOT talking about the facts. And how much is NOT investigated by the agencies.

The best overview is given by Kevin Shipp

Even the fact that we know that the CIA tortures proves my point. We will not know everything, but there is almost always a glimpse of the truth

They release that information on purpose. And that's not the half of it.

Torture is a form of terror. Torturing Manning and Assange is a warning to whistleblowers and journalists.

Sure we know some of what happened in Abu Ghraib prison, and less of GitMo. But what about the unknowable countless black sites and ocean prisons?

Faith in the government is stupid.
