Shameful bloatwear. Seriously, how can anyone working at Microsoft be proud of what they have inflicted on the world?

I'm never installing Win11. I'll just delete win10 when it's out of service or whatever they call it and go Linux.

What sucks is, no matter which OS you use, the guvmint still has backdoor access to your CPU and RAM. You literally cannot hide anything from them on a computer. This is beyond dystopian.

Linux + an ARM processor.

[–]Alphix 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun - (2 children)

Yeah but how much computing power can I get with that?

[–]Megatron95 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun - (1 child)

Not as much computing power for now unfortunately. I have a Raspberry pi 400 that I love and it's suitable for most things except graphically demanding games. My 5 year old PC is still faster.

So... Still a very far cry from my 16-core AMD monster. Yeah, I mean, I'll get on board once the hardware catches up. Provided there's no back door...

By far my favorite Windows 11 story.

https://www.xda-developers.com/microsoft-breaks-windows-11-by-injecting-ads/

It doesn't get any more late-stage capitalist than this.

opens calculator and puts in 2+2.

*Calculator says "please wait while we load the answer, and enjoy a word from our sponsors".

*30 seconds later, it says an error has occurred, "something went wrong", because it couldn't contact the ad network, and refuses to solve the math problem.

Go back to Windows 7 and start from there.

No good for gamers, as Steam is ending Windows 7 support next year.

Yeah, my PC runs on 7 and I've refused to upgrade because I'm used to the UI and I don't want to have to re-learn everything for 10; but the notion of being locked out of all the games I have on Steam bothers me. Are the growing pains from 7 to 10 bad, or is it manageable?

10 is 'fine' for a vidya box, just remove as much bloat as possible and install Classic Shell. Might also have to regedit to stop windows from constantly pushing win 11, but seems only certain win10 installs do this.

Thanks, but I think I might actually have to take the leap and just upgrade my hardware so I can play Star Citizen; it seems to actually be developing into something.

I am thinking of going with Debian or Ubuntu, Steam supports those operating systems. When is SteamOS coming out?

I just said this elsewhere -- go with Mint Cinnamon. The interface design is roughly similar to Windows, so it's very approachable to Windows users.

Looks good, and reminds me of Linux Ubuntu Cinnamon.

What, HTML not working at Saidit? https://ubuntucinnamon.org/

Let’s be honest, it was just a matter of time. They have not had to release a useful product for 100 years now.

The degradation of our morals, and their quality have been surmounting over the years.

OK, is it a good idea to switch to Linux if I use a bunch of Windows only programs?

[–]chadwickofwv 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun - (3 children)

So what Windows-only programs do you use that simply cannot be replaced?

[–]catfishrising 3 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 1 fun4 insightful - 2 fun - (0 children)

And if they cannot be replaced -- how well do they run under Wine?

[–]Newzok 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun - (1 child)

After effects and smaller animation programs.

[–]Airbus320 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun - (0 children)

Wine might run some of them

Pretty inspiring stuff, Gene.

[–]Ferretman 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun - (0 children)

Oh dear.....well that sucks.

Glad I didn't do any of the upgrades, I reckon.

One of the earliest mistakes that Bill Gates made was he assumed that $640k of ram would be plenty and would be more than anybody would ever need..

And so what did they do they made some monkey ass memory manager that was a workaround it was like putting a Band-Aid on the problem instead of going back and just completely solving the problem and writing software that looks at an unlimited amount of memory is though it's one continuous stream of memory here I don't know the exact details but they didn't fix the problem instead they patched it.

Pretty soon after you put so many patches so many Band-Aids on something it's like repairing things using duct tape it only works for a little bit and then it starts looking real funky and then the tape gets rained on and the whole thing falls apart.

Fk Bill Gates if he wasn't banging trannies his wife wouldn't have left him and he'd have more time to take care of his software problems

$640k of ram

That's a lot of RAM.

[–]Node 2 insightful - 3 fun2 insightful - 2 fun3 insightful - 3 fun - (0 children)

May want to set that computer on a concrete pad.

[–]STRAPONMONKEYDICK 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun - (0 children)

My first computer was an Atari 800 and it had something like 64k of RAM and I would write basic programs in it and machine language assembler programs and it was really quite enough and then I upgraded the memory on my Atari to 128k of RAM I had to go to an Electronics guy who custom Jimmy rigged it into it and it was really nice I could make a ram disc

More likely it is due to all the cloud integration, and the constant phoning home at every step of the operation of the machine. They broke the start menu before, precisely this way, as I showed in my other comment.
