Apparently some laptops actually ship with power adapters that cannot fully support them while plugged in unless a battery is present. The result of this is, if you don't have a battery in the laptop, you get system throttling while plugged in.

Shady as hell. It's like if I were to sell TVs where the power components inside cannot support it running with full screen brightness and high sound volume, excusing the behavior because "no reasonable user will ever do that".
