Software exists for three reasons.

  1. Serve the user.

  2. Work reliably.

  3. Leave me alone.

You know, kind of like a microwave, a bed, a table or refrigerator. In the year 2000, we at least had two out of those three; software left me alone and obeyed me. (The less said about the reliability, the better.)

But now, software is failing literally on all three counts.

I miss the 1990s, when Microsoft abused their competitors, not their customers. Say what you want about Windows 9x being about as stable as a stack of empty soda cans in the wind,, but at least it left me the fuck alone!

So, have Microsoft build a dossier on you, or have Google build a dossier on you? Goodness, what a conundrum.
