It ain't easy, I assure you.

Hydrogen has a rather hard to control combustion. It as well as the ignition timing are extremely dependent on piston geometry and materials.

Engines retrofitted for natural gas (CH4 in a very wide sense) are way easier to use with hydrogen. Especially when they have spark-plugs to control ignition timings better.

We are in the process of refurbishing an all-fuel engine model from Brazil and still scratching our heads often.

Nat gas has the same problems than hydrogen, in a smaller scale and hazard levels. Its still much more dangerous than traditional gasoline.

Id argue even electric is far more dangerous given that an explosion can cause a much bigger fire from the battery's components.
