problem with hydrogen is that it takes 9kw of solar to produce 1kw of hydrogen which then has to be refrigerated for storage consumiug more power

It does not have to be refrigerated. But you do need a high pressure tank.

It also diffuses trough literally everything if not kept cool enough. Which is a problem because H is highly explosive (in combination with oxygen in surrounding air).

In think the stations store it as water and when you go to fill up they use the electricity to separate it there and then.

you can make hydrogen at home or standing in a forest, if you have a DC source, water and some baking soda.
