These are pretty easy to build if you are the least bit handy with tools. I made one for a class science project when I was a teenager. In a pinch, you can make one out of plastic water bottles that will get you minimal drinking water.

You can make a giant solar still with a sheet of plastic for probably as much, without having to find whatever that floaty thing is they're using.

If the technology were viable they would not be advertising it as "family use" they would be pitching it to municipalities to build desalination plants for entire cities.
