Why don't you just make local DNS records pointing 'qbittorrent' to what the local IP is? Can't you prefer your local DNS and have it fall back to public DNS if the record is not found? Isn't DNS a hierarchy anyways?

One potential issue. I start a blog with a million visitors. Then I decide I want to DDOS you. So I show all of my visitors this link: [your-personal-server]http://example.com

    This sounds similar to the concept of a Service Registry
