Firefox is so messed up, it runs a background service which constantly phones home to mozilla telling them what your current default browser is even if you’re not using firefox

It does? I've had a sniff around process hacker and nothing is even remotely related to firefox when it's not running. Perhaps you mistyped "chrome?"
