Today, noyb filed complaints against the cookie paywalls of seven major German and Austrian news websites. An increasing amount of websites asks their users to either agree to data being passed on to hundreds of tracking companies or take out a subscription.

They can't run a business free. Advertising is how they see that they will make profit enough to stay open. Websites are different than television or newspapers in that people can avoid the ads. People go to different websites when they are looking to purchase something. Maybe a marketing expert could provide more information.
