This shouldn't matter that much though, right? It's all federated so all I need is the frontend software and a host server.

I wonder how much storage it would take to mirror it all and/or if they can bundle and torrent it or share it via IPFS too.

There's no underlying P2P storage mechanism in PeerTube. Every site hosts their own videos. Their site gives an overview when you scroll down: note the part under the heading "About peer-to-peer broadcasting and watching" which describes a Bitchute-style P2P live swarm of viewers that only applies to videos being watched. No video replication.

Peertube.social's about page shows how much they're hosting locally: 7823 videos comprising 1649.3 GB. I doubt that's archivable at this point. Maybe they'd make a copy for somebody who sends them a disk, but it's really up to the uploader to care for their content.

The point of PeerTube is that we don't have to rely on the big sites to maintain open-access video hosts. You can spin up your own node and only pay for your own bandwidth, which is cheaper than ever.
