If you're ever in the San Jose area and you want to be startled witless by a Tesla coil (for free), then head over to the Fry's Electronics store in Fremont California.

IIRC it starts up every 30 mins; without warning. If you're within 50 ft of the display when it starts up; your shopping experience will be interrupted by the unnatural shreik of 1.5 million volts of electricity tearing through the air. The video doesn't do it justice.
It's about 20 mins from the San Jose airport, or 10 mins from the NUMMI Tesla plant. Well worth the trip if your have a passion for physics. Don't wear white shorts.

Edit: changed the video video time to start at 0:25. The coil turns on at 0:30.

Whoa that's cool! They even put a neon sign in there

It turns on at 0:30. I'm sure the video started early, as there's no advanced notification prior to startup.
