The windmills in Canada are working just fine, it's been down to -20 C here lately. Obviously these particular windmills weren't built for extreme cold temperatures.

plenty of oil keeping them going.....

Cold and dry is fine, cold and wet is icicles.

First off, the power outages were primarily because of natural gas plants that were forced to shut down. The state doesn't have a lot of storage at their plants, or infrastructure designed to handle weather this cold. If you want a real article on the power situation instead of more of the right-wing crap that dominates this site, I recommend this one.

With regards to wind, it is true that some wind turbines did shut down because of the cold as well, but wind power makes up 7% of Texas' energy grid. Natural Gas makes up 40%. Also, the turbines on the coast that weren't shut down due to temps were actually putting out more power than is typical for this time of year because of the winds from the storm.

Complete lie. Nat Gas as a percent of energy mix tripled while renewables went to zero. Stop gaslighting.

Here is a graph of the energy generated by source around when the shutdowns happened. Maybe you can help me understand, but it seems to me like your 3x stat is bogus, and the only time that renewables (wind) went to (near) zero was during the day, well after the shutdowns.

I heard solar and wind were 40%? And solar and wind are absolutely shit when it snows...

    [–]FediNetizen 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Solar + Wind is not Wind. But no, it's definitely not 40% either way. This chart says wind is actually 16%, while natural gas is over 50%. I wonder what the 7% figure in the article was referring to then.

    [–]Bigs 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

My bad, I was just skimming an article that said "a fourth", so 25%.

Edit. Looking at the "7%" article, it's bullshit propaganda. Take a closer look at it?

    [–]bjam27 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Closer to 90% of you look at the energy mix.

Nat Gas as a percent of energy mix tripled while renewables dropped off a cliff.

But politicians will still force and subsidize unreliable renewals and restrict gas. Thousands would be dead without gas.

    [–]bjam27 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

Lefties really deny science. Nat Gas literally saved the day. Renewables caused this and its not even the first time. Expect far more in the future.

Yeah, no. Wind output was already highly variable and the loss from shutdowns was negligible compared to total load. Plants couldn't get gas because others needed it for heating, and their pipes were freezing because they hadn't winterized.

Have you never stopped to wonder why you can find wind farms (and natural gas plants) at Northern latitudes where it regularly gets colder than what Texas experienced, as if these same areas don't experience weather like this every year?

that shit caught me off guard entirely. My car froze, with no antifreeze.. I only had 1/2 bottle of propane for my portable heater..the water is turned off. the electricity went off for almost two days.

the power is back on, east of houston, just fyi, if not i would be in really bad shape.

lol at blaming it on windmills

some say that wind disrupts airflow on earth and making solar panels fucks up a lot of environment so...nuclear seems like the way to go but it's too serious.

    [–]blowininthewind 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

yeah and some say that has its own problem too so idk

Gettting messages from my friend in Houston. He has never seen weather like they have there now. He says possible illegals are selling meth everywhere. Seems that the MSM is not reporting any of this. Manipulated weather? Even if you're not a prepper it might be a good time to stock the essentials. It's so strange that this happened just when Traitor Joe mentioned taking away guns. Look for this is your neighborhood soon. Oh, and: Screw You Greta.

    [–]bobbobbybob 4 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 1 fun5 insightful - 2 fun -  (1 child)

Totally expected weather. Wavy polar flow, low magnetosphere, grand solar minimum. Its going to get a lot colder.

    [–]hennaojichan 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

Hey, I am not surprised; I'm just saying that it is happening now, precisely at the right time. As \u\bigs says, I am a "climate denier." Also, there was no prediction of illegals selling meth all over Houston. And, yes, I've tried meth and it was so nice I will try to never do it again. So those, Not Even Once ads are baloney. My friend was going to the super when an illegal rear-ended him and then tried to sell him some.

    [–]Bigs 3 insightful - 3 fun3 insightful - 2 fun4 insightful - 3 fun -  (1 child)

Well climate "deniers" have been warning of the coming cold for a long time. I guess you didn't listen?

    [–]hennaojichan 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

No, I listened. There has been a mini ice age predicted for many years. I AM a "climate denier." Screw you lil Greta.

    [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 2 fun2 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 2 fun -  (3 children)

wait does he think it's cold cuz of illegals selling meth

    [–]hennaojichan 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (2 children)

I think he was suggesting that the meth was part of a "plan." He thinks the Chinese are working with the cartels to maximize damage to the US. Maybe that is going too far but he is onsite. Did you know that the Chinese Consulate in Houston was closed down within the last year because it was claimed that the consulate was a "den of spies?" It is convenient for enemies of the US that suddenly there is a wheat-killing frost just before the effects on the food chain are starting to be felt. The chain of coincidences is a bit too long.

    [–][deleted] 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

meth is made in america, one of the last things made in red states lol

    [–]hennaojichan 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

In fact a lot of it is made in China too. SE Asia is flooded with it and it is high quality. Yeah, there are are a lot of labs everywhere in the US but they cannot match the consistent quality and volume of the Chinese product. A few months ago police in Japan busted a boat from Hong Kong that had several tons of the stuff. But, yes, I understand that there are a lot of contradictions about where it comes from.

    [–]bjam27 1 insightful - 2 fun1 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 2 fun -  (0 children)

Not the first time and won't be the last as renewable scams are forced on the public.

Republicans are a special breed of fucking stupid. Wind turbines are fine. Here in Iowa it’s been much colder and the turbines are completely fine. Texas is weak as shit

    [–]bobbobbybob 3 insightful - 1 fun3 insightful - 0 fun4 insightful - 1 fun -  (3 children)

why make this a partisan issues? Texas isn't used to fucking cold weather, because it is anomalous. They were expecting global warming, not polar freezes.

Texas.... how far south is that? record cold?

    [–]RightousBob 2 insightful - 1 fun2 insightful - 0 fun3 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

What’s this have to do with republicans?

Look who is running the state

    [–]madcow-5 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (1 child)

That's about as dumb of a take as you can get. This weather is incredibly bizarre for Texas, a totally different climate from Iowa.

    [–]Poofter 1 insightful - 1 fun1 insightful - 0 fun2 insightful - 1 fun -  (0 children)

So essentially Texas is filled with a bunch of pussies
