Sounds like a neat idea, but I see some serious privacy issues with this.

  1. It uses the cloud for translation, meaning everything you say/photograph will be sent to some cloud running proprietary software and probably logged as well.
  2. It uses a SIM card for connectivity, so all your movements while you carry it can be tracked by telecom service providers. (It's not like this is any different from what happens when you carry a regular cell phone anyway.)

I get why they chose to use the cloud approach though. It would probably take a lot more computing power to run high quality translation software than can be contained in this little device (at this point in time). Maybe in the future we can have affordable translation devices that don't rely on the cloud.
