One way they are way more evil: Their are powered by Googol software and as such spying on you all time. That is the reason why they are so cheap as the marketing tactic behind these things is:

You don't only pay with your money, you become a data-mine.

My opinion on the best laptop to have (for work) stays what it always was:

Get a Lenovo thinkpad with a linux in your favorite flavour and you are stripped for every task that may come up if you can.

Next best thing is HP, from my experience and i'm mostly concerned about durability, quality and linux-compatibility.

Even a refurbished or older one probably is faster than most Chromebooks around.

The one i'm writing this on right now had a price-tag of 160 € (in February 2018), is built in 2013 and still runs manjaro like a charm because it is a refurbished business model (These usually came with "another" sort of manufacturing quality that is why they mostly carried a more expensive price tag). I didn't even change the SSD so far. I only deleted the hidden partition with windooze on it.

I'm always opposing shilling for spying Megacorps, especially Googol.

Degoogolize your world, don't googolize it, as far as you can. If you can value your privacy with any nonnegative price-tag.

Why Lenovo?

In my experience they are very modular (so repairable), durable and high-quality (concerning displays and batteries e.g. : Mine is still bright enough for outdoor use and i still can do it for over 3 hours even though it is still the first battery and i use this laptop almost every day). They also have the trackpoint in most notebooks (which you will miss once you get used to never have both your hands leave the keyboard anymore) and the keyboards have a nice typing "feel" because you actually can push the buttons quite a bit down. Honestly i never had better laptop keyboards. I instantly miss them when i'm on my toughbook, e.g. .
