Fully automated flight is way simpler than fully automated cars; that we're just getting this now shows how the car automation problem isn't going to be solved, at least not anytime soon.
Most people who think it will have never been outside of a metro area.

We can get it self driving cars to work well in cities at least. You're right though, it is difficult to get something like that to work in rural areas...

Car semi-automation can actually work, as long as there is good network coverage - have a single human operator center (say, 50 operators) per X cars (for example 10,000), who can take control of the vehicle once it us "unsure" of the road. This would be a subscription based service, of course. The fallback to this would be the cars slowing down, and eventually stopping, if the drivers do not take manual control.

Oh they already did that with the last 9/11. Fly-by-wire, is what it's called. There's no way basically-untrained pilots carried out those maneuvers and hit so exactly, imo. Plus they didn't want them backing out last minute, Israel needed the war in Iraq... so fly-by-wire. It's been installed in some planes since the late 90s.

It'll be the same as autonomous cars. Some drunk homeless person goes out of their way to get killed and the whole project will be shut down. Not to mention there will be a pilot in the cockpit anyway.
