I've just received a free laptop that I've factory reset (Windows 7).
I'm looking to make it into something cool/useful for me and the wife.
Maybe interested in making a cloud storage system for our devices?
Looking for ideas.

If you have wifi, then making a home storage server is very possible. I suggest searching for information on that, depending on your platform of choice.

To round out the great suggestions youve got so far, maybe a PiHole to clean up your DNS service, or turn it into a wall mounted photo player.
