There’s a company in Beverly Hills called HologramUSA/FilmOnTV that I believe has the rights to both Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. They’ve been very busy pitching their concept around town. None of this has really inspired tons of interest, though, yet. I think hologram technology is really going to have to take a major step forward before it’s more than a novelty, like a wax museum.

People want live music because they want to feel the transmission of the live artist. Otherwise, it’s like listening to a record. We just don’t even have the technology to make recorded music sound as rich as live music in any form, yet. One could argue for the 8 track but really we STILL haven’t improved upon the hundred year old technology of the vinyl record, largely because it’s been more cost effective to make the sound LOWER quality. Digital music isn’t even CD quality, let alone record or 8 track quality.

Perhaps something like this will be the impetus for that change but most of the people developing this technology care more about the hologram than the music — so they’re missing the whole point. I don’t know anyone in the music industry who is taking this seriously. Right now, I can only see this being used at festivals (as a side show) and theme parks but until they make some major jump, it’s not even filling the Hollywood Palladium, let alone the Hollywood Forum.

It’s easier to sell this stuff to families of dead celebs because there’s the novelty of bringing back the dead and they basically just want to exploit whatever rights they can. A couple years ago I worked with someone who repped a major major film and TV celeb who they were very keen to sign and their presentation barely scored a blip with him.

There’s a reason I paid $100 to see Fleetwood Mac at the Forum last year and this was not it.

Wow, I like how much you've thought about this.

I didn't think the sound would be bad by comparison, but you're right, I could just stay at home and listen to iPod lol.

I'm sure there are some kind of work arounds they'll invent (gotta get them dollars, yo!) - but my guess, now that I think about it, eventually you could produce "robot" versions of people and sort of "randomise" their "on-stage" personality and let the robos them jam out the old tunes, could be kind of fun.

Pretty disgusting how they'll take advantage of tragedy to sell this kind of stuff (same probably applies to like, robot versions of loved one - or whatever, like that episode of black mirror).
